The JoSAA 2025 Counselling process is one of the most crucial stages for students who have appeared in JEE Main or Advanced and are aiming for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
One small mistake during choice filling can cost you the dream seat you’ve worked so hard for.
So, here’s a complete list of Do’s and Don’ts to help you navigate this process wisely.
✅ Do’s:
1. Understand the Counselling Process Thoroughly
- Read the JoSAA 2025 Business Rules carefully.
- Understand round-wise seat allotment, float/slide/freeze options, and withdrawal policies.
2. Check Opening & Closing Ranks of Previous Years
- Refer to JoSAA 2024 or 2023 round-wise cutoffs for your category, gender, and home state.
- Use this to build a realistic list of choices.
3. Fill as Many Choices as Possible
- JoSAA allows you to fill hundreds of choices — use that opportunity.
- Arrange them in descending order of your preference, not based on cutoffs only.
4. Use JoSAA Mock Allotment Rounds Wisely
- After two mock rounds, update your choices based on realistic expectations.
- Mock allotments are great indicators of your possible final seat.
5. Research Institutes & Branches Carefully
- Look at infrastructure, faculty, placement stats, internships, and NIRF ranking.
- Prioritize core branches if unsure (CSE, ECE, Mechanical, EE, Civil).
6. Prioritize Branch Over Institute (or vice versa) Based on Your Career Goal
- If you’re clear about a specific branch (e.g., CS), choose it even in lower-ranked NITs/IIITs.
- If you want exposure/network, consider institute reputation (e.g., IITs) more.
7. Consider Home State Quota
- Some NITs and GFTIs give 50% seats to home state students — a major advantage!
8. Keep Backup Options
- Always include safe options (branches with higher cutoff than your rank) in case top preferences are not allotted.
❌ Don’ts:
1. Don’t Fill Only a Few Top Choices
- Limiting to 10–20 top preferences might leave you with no seat.
- Many students go unallotted in Round 1 just because of this.
2. Don’t Rely Solely on Mock Allotments
- Mock rounds are simulations — not the final outcome.
- Don’t get overconfident or demotivated based on them.
3. Don’t Choose Colleges Just Because Friends Are Going
- Your interest and future career plan matter more than peer pressure.
4. Don’t Forget to Lock Your Choices
- If you don’t lock choices before the deadline, the system will auto-lock the last saved list — which might be incomplete!
5. Don’t Misunderstand Float, Slide, Freeze Options
- Wrong use of these options can lead to undesired seat locks or missed upgrades.
6. Don’t Assume Branch Change is Easy
- Intra-college branch change after 1st year is highly competitive.
- Choose a branch you can live with if branch change doesn’t happen.
7. Don’t Miss the Deadline
- JoSAA deadlines are strict. Even a delay of 1 minute after the deadline won’t be excused.
